Dick Cowell has played an extraordinary role for over a half century in our sport. He represents a continuing presence as almost no one now living does. He skied in the first World Championships in Juan les Pins in 1949, and he has attended all but one of the World Tournaments ever since including the 2009 World Championships in 2009. As the Secretary General of the Pan American Region from 1963 to 1971, Dick was actively involved during the emergence of the sport on an international level, but he regards his greatest achievement as the development, in that period, of organized water skiing in Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the West Indies.  If there is something to be remembered or to be celebrated in the sport of water skiing, Dick is there to reminisce or to organize the party.  He was rightly  inducted  into the International Hall of Fame as a man who has been around water skiing longer than any today.

Des Burke-Kennedy met Dick and his wife in Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel and brought them to visit Golden Falls on the weekend when we were actually launching our present Jump Ramp for the first time in preparation for our internationally famous Paddy Classics. Dick insisted in having a Barefoot run – and when we looked in the mirror and saw him with the handle over his head, a legend could have come to a sudden end !  Dick survived – and if you look very closely at his “collectors item” yellow jacket, you will see a Golden Falls green and gold badge proudly displayed on the lower middle area.
