CRISIS CALL FOR HELP FROM GOLDEN FALLS !

SEVERE WATER EROSION THREATENS HALF CENTURY OF WATERSKI HISTORY

It has been a fantastic 60+ years of Waterskiing at Golden Falls WSC in County Kildare. The visitors list is a Who’s Who of our sport and much more, from President Mary Robinson to Chris deBurgh, to Freddy Krueger and Jaret Llewellyn, Emma Sheers to Toni and Bruce Neville,  June Fladborg and Brenda Nicholls Baldwin and many more, and not to forget introducing the great Ray Stokes to Europe almost 20 years ago. It is also the home of Donal Connolly’s SplashEye technology and the site of a World Jump Record, plus 17 National Records of other Countries ! Totally run by a team of volunteers, sadly, all this illustrious past is now under the biggest threat facing the Club since 1959 !

Briefly, here is what has happened. The water levels of Golden Falls Lake are controlled as it is located between two Dams. Over the past two years, these water levels have been consistently at higher levels than ever before. This has pushed the water up to soft soil on the banks leading to the Club – and also around the entry Bridge,  the Boardwalk and Clubhouse foundations. The erosion has been dramatic and it still continues. This is what faced the Members as they arrived a few months ago ……..

NO ENTRY

NO ENTRY

You can just imagine the shock but worse lay ahead. The beautiful tree lined entrance lane planted by Ken Bryan and Des Burke-Kennedy was totally removed, the bank close to the Clubhouse had partially collapsed and and examination of some of the area under the Boardwalk showed clearly that some form of reclamation was urgently required.

As you can imagine, it has been a very traumatic 2012 season so far for Golden Falls Members. True to form, they all ganged together to immediately fund and construct a new Starting Dock Jetty in the Car Park to at least provide some basic skiing facilities. We highlighted this recently here on our Website and Facebook. This has worked but without access to the Clubhouse and its facilities and watching the erosion continue has created a real crisis for the immediate future.

At this point, Club members are still shell shocked ! Several options are being explored but all seem to suggest that serious funds are going to be needed to save this wonderful facility. To lose such a great Waterski venue with such a long history would really be tragic for not just our Waterski followers but for all the wider area of Ballymore Eustace and Blessington and Dublin generally. At a time when recreation and exercise are so important to community health, a solution must be found somehow.

We will keep you informed as this situation develops. Any suggestions or help which can be provided will be worth its weight in gold ! More to follow …….
