FINAL COMPETITION OF THE YEAR GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR ALL

GF Sept 2015-3

It has been one of the best seasons on the water for all at Golden Falls for many years. Finishing our competition season on a high helped even more to highlight the talents of our Slalom Skiers of the future – well done to all.

A special thanks to Walter Dickson for all his hard work on site preparation and the great renovations this Summer. Many thanks also to Carl Cautley for his Chief Judge work and encouragement and Judge Dianne Kirby for coming down from Belfast to help. ‘And thanks also one again to Martin Cullinan for providing our Sound System which makes such a difference every year and to Ciara Durham who organises the great food on site to stop us all from getting cranky.

‘And now for the athletes …..

As a Personal Best Competition, each Skier competed against their own Person Best scores over the past two seasons. For Novices, their base scores were estimated as fairly as possible – and then the competition began. In the Novices, we were delighted to welcome newcomers local skier Fran Flynn and Etrusca Eleuteri form Italy via London. As it turned out, Fran took the Gold Medal Cash and Etrusca the Bronze Medal Cash. Ben Dickson, who has shown enormous improvements this season took the well deserved Silver Medal Cash. Well done to all three and we really do look forward to seeing them back again with us next year.

For the Open Skiers, a tough battle tested the nerves of season warriors Simon Durham, Sam Burke-Kennedy, Fiachra O’Riordan, JoJo Cox and others. This time it was our rising star and Show Jumper and Golden Falls member Abby Durham who took home the top prize – closely followed by Geovanni Benton from Italy and Megan Fitzpatrick from Meteor WSC. Congratulations to you all.

Finally, as we all headed for Mick Murphy’s to celebrate, we will be closing off 2015 as soon as there is a sign of frost but when we get back again in 2016, be prepared for a few major surprises at the Club. Our lips are sealed till then !!!!!GF Sept 2015-3

MEMORY TEST FOR THOSE WHO CAN RECALL GOLDEN FALLS FUN TIMES

Back : John Corkery, Des Burke-Kennedy, Dom Jameson, Front: Robin Skelton, Michele Cautley, Carl Cautley

There was a time when one of the most anticipated annual Waterski events on Ireland’s annual calendar was what was known as the National InterClub Championships. Usually held towards the end of the season, this was when each Club selected their six best Skiers and trying to get the perfect mix of Slalom Tricks and Jump athletes, all met to battle it out over a weekend.

The National InterClub Shield was the coveted trophy – and it is still out there somewhere. Have you got it ? It would be great to recover all the details on the name plates so let us know if it is somewhere in your attic.

Very often, the final battle for the Trophy was between Meteor WSC in Belfast and Golden Falls WSC in Ballymore, Co. Kildare. On this occasion above, Golden Falls took home the InterClub Shield. Here you will see a bunch of youngsters who have actually all survived the years and are still on the water today in varying degrees !

At the back we see “smoking” John Corkery who married another Golden Falls member by the name of Patricia from nearby Bray. They now live in the New Jersey and John and some friends set up the very successful Twin Lakes WSC. Next is Des Burke-Kennedy who in between injuries still gets out on the water at Golden Falls, and now lives in Dalkey, County Dublin after some years overseas in the UK and USA. He is the Club’s current Chairman, President of the Irish Waterski & Wakeboard Federation and is also involved with the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation. Next is Dom Jameson who now lives in Killiney although he did spend some years in Australia. That 13m Slalom line still works for him and don’t rule our further PB’s. Dom now has his own Landscaping business but like John Corkery, he also married a Golden Falls Club member by the name of Michele Cautley – see below.

In the front is Robin Skelton who lives in nearby Naas. As with John Corkery, he also set up his own Waterski Club – Stillwaters WSC – and is also still active as a member of our National 35+ Waterski Team. In the middle is the lovely Michele Cautley who is now Mrs Jameson. On marrying fellow InterClub Team Member, Dom Jameson, many other Waterski admirers were very disappointed to have been beaten to that  proposal and have only recently forgiven Dom ! Michele is also still an active Waterskier and over the years, held many National titles. Lastly, that angry looking fair haired Skier with an attitude has greatly matured over the years !  Michele’ brother Carl Cautley has actually been an inspiration to many both on and off the water. He too held many National Waterski Records over the years and introduced our dear friend ray Stokes to the Club over 20 years ago. He was an active member of the Irish Waterski & Wakeboard Federation and is an excellent Coach. Carl also married another Golden Falls Member, Patricia Rooney and now runs his own very successful Fitness and Life Coaching business in Dublin.

So, this was a very special Golden Falls InterClub Team – with three of them marrying other Club Members to prove that what happens at Golden Falls stays at Golden Falls ! Great memories of very happy times.

OUR QUESTION IS : WHAT YEAR IS FEATURED IN THIS PHOTO ?

MEMBERS MAKE IT A GREAT LAST EVENT FOR 2012

The Car Park was full, the blue skies and sunshine made it look like Summer – and the water was just perfect. What a perfect way to end our 2012 season.

Best of all, our Members turned out in force and the really big surprise was the number of outstanding performances achieved.

Carl put the whole thing together, Geoff was the Driver and all helped to make it a fun event. We don’t have the actual scores yet as I think they are in Mick Murphy’s right now – but we’ll upload them asap.

PERFECT WATER TODAY FOR KILDARE CO CO

PATRICIA BRINGS A TALENTED TEAM FOR NEAR DAWN EXPERIENCE !

Patricia and the Kildare CoCo Team

Patricia and the Kildare CoCo Team

We can say that 09.00hrs is almost Dawn at this time of the year ! Well done to Patricia Berry of Kildare County Council for bringing her talented team down to the Club on a chilly morning today. Actually, the water was 3C warmer than the air and as Sam and Des got the Malibu ready, six brave souls prepared for their very first Waterski experience at Golden Falls.

As Club Members know, our Teaching Boom makes it a lot of fun for beginners and watching all six Kildare CoCo athletes make it up and down the Lake in style with no problems at all at all, it was a great morning in perfect skiing conditions. In fact, the early morning mist burned off by Noon and all went home certain that this was a fun way to spend a Saturday.

Patricia and the team are already looking forward to returning to Golden Falls next season and we greatly look forward to seeing them back with us as soon as Spring 2013 arrives.

Carl shows how its done

After all the rain and wind and various challenges, we are now back on the water in full force once again. Daryl is our Duty Driver all day Saturday and Sunday – and we hope to attract as many visitors and groups as possible to be with us on those mornings so that Members will have more time on the water in the afternoons. For Visitor and Group bookings, all are asked to call Daryl as soon as possible so that we can look after everybody well : 087 668 6225

Thank you also to Figs, Carl, Geoff, Sam, Richard, Simon and Mark for volunteering to take over as Drivers on Tuesday and Thursday nights. There is a copy of the NEW Weekday Drivers Rota available here :

We will also shortly launch our SAVE GOLDEN FALLS campaign to kick start our  major recovery plan caused by the serious bank erosion challenge which has caused huge disruption this season – so watch this space for updates on our plans and hopes for the future.

WORK OF ART COMPLETED LAST NIGHT !

WE WOZ AMAZED THAT IT ALL CONNECTED UP PERFECTLY !

The Diskin Ladies nursed the connections together !

The Diskin Ladies nursed the connections together !

Last night at the lake, as the warm sun sank over the west end on perfect Golden Falls glass water, we had a moment to remember !

For weeks and weeks we rattled our brains on how best to construct a second Starting Dock at our Car Park for use while the serious bank erosion problem is tackled over at our Clubhouse area – all with no budget for the work !  What followed was months of designing, welding, constructing, concrete mixing, wood working and tough laboring – all by willing volunteers who gave their free time and money willingly. The final stage eventually arrived last night. Would it all connect correctly with tiny tolerances for the stainless steel bolts, spacers, washers and hinges ? The room for error was about 2.0mm.

Male volunteers like to stay dry !

Well, thankfully there was a happy ending to this story. To our own amazement, it all worked perfectly. The first stage of stainless steel walkway is now embedded in concrete on the land-side, the second stage of stainless steel walkway is hinged to both stage one and the new floating dock. The walkway panels also fitted perfectly and even the blue barrels used for flotation did their job – although we may add to these shortly. Finally, the stainless steel anchor lines were connected before we headed home.

The happy sunset moment last night

The happy sunset moment last night

Expecting a few hitches lat night – which never arose, we even had time to sit down and stare at the new creation in the warm sunset – and also do a bit of smiling !

This really was a great Club effort and we would like to thank all who helped along the way. However we have one special person to thank most of all and that is Joe Hearne. Both his time, skill and welding expertise was the secret to this perfect outcome. On behalf of all our Members – A BIG THANK-YOU TO JOE FOR HIS VERY GENEROUS CONTRIBUTION AT OUR TIME OF NEED HERE AT GOLDEN FALLS.

FINAL STAGE OF FUEL JETTY DEVELOPMENT

BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND TO SEE COMPLETION OF OUR FUEL JETTY PROJECT

This looked like a minor project when we started. Making safe and extending our Fuel Dock Jetty did not look like a big deal – but it was !

Two part walkway almost ready for launching

Two part walkway almost ready for launching

Firstly, we went the stainless steel route – thanks to Joe Hearne’s welding skills. We learned many years ago that while it may be a bit expensive, it does last more or less forever. The new Jetty walkway has been made in two hinged sections and they are now waiting on the slipway for assembly – see photo.

On goes the lid !

On goes the lid !

Next, we had to repair and extend the old wooden floating dock. Des B-K has the carpentry almost completed. Again, this is in two sections which will be bolted together in the water. The top sheeting will be finished on Friday and then we have to figure out how to move it all to the slipway to insert the barrels. It is a fierce weight and some willing hands will be needed.

More to be poured on the right

More to be poured on the right

On Friday, we are also looking at pouring more concrete to expand the slab laid a few weeks ago as it is just not big enough for the correct placement of the walkway. Getting it done will depend on the water levels. Today, the water was perfect – so lets hope we get lucky again in a few days.

Figs, Simon, Geoff, Sam, Richard, Mark, Joe, Rick and Siggi have all played their part along the way – and now we may even get this job off our backs this weekend. Do drop down as the more hands we have the better.

BUSY PREPARATIONS CONTINUE FOR SUMMER 2012 SEASON

CONCRETE SET, WELDING CONTINUES, WOODWORK AND ASSEMBLY SOON

Concrete in place

Concrete in place

It may look a bit on the quiet side down at the Golden Falls Lake at the moment

but don’t be fooled by that !

Right now, the new concrete plinth for receiving the new STAINLESS STEEL walkway from the Car Park Jetty has firmly set. As you can see from the photo, all looks ready for the structural engineering delivery !

Back at Watermark Engineering, Joe Hearne is welding away and the two walkway sections and support unit will be on site shortly. We will let all Members know when we will need a hand but in the meantime, feel free to help clean up the Car Park area and remove the Trailer which is ready for a visit to the Dump.

Old Jetty ready for expansion

Old Jetty ready for expansion

We are also just about to start the carpentry work on the expanded old wooden Jetty which will also house the LPG equipment as before. Des is rounding up his saws and drills and is ready for action. Once this is ready, then we can assemble the lot and put that Malibu in the water where is deserves to be !

Get ready – we are almost there and Daryl is waiting for you to bring all your friends down to the Lake to enjoy every moment of this Summer ahead. GROUPS will be especially welcome. We also have some very special Ski Packages to announce shortly – a first in Ireland with a novel twist ! Working from the Car Park in the early stages will be a bit challenging but that will not be for long as development plans will be released for all to see very soon.

SEE YOU AT THE LAKE SHORTLY

CONCRETE POURED AND NEW ACCESS PATH CLEARED

As we all know, these past few months have delivered a few major shocks to Golden Falls – but thanks to the great support of our Members, solutions are on the way !

Access path and new concrete plinth

Access path and new concrete plinth

Over these past weeks and following our recent Committee meeting, we have worked on our plans to ensure that our 2012 Waterski season will be another great one for all. Our first challenge was to repair the old Fuel Jetty which was also damaged by the extraordinary water levels of this past year. Thanks to Figs, Simon, Daryl, Geoff, Siggi and Joe, the old structure was removed to our Car Park, Gas lines disconnected and a frame created for the pouring of the cement for the new base plinth. That concrete has already set. Fortunately, the water was at normal level at that time. This morning – see photo – that plinth was back under water again !

Pathway to the new Jetty

Pathway to the new Jetty

The stainless steel walkway comprising two lengths of 5m is under construction by Joe Hearne and thanks to Joe’s great efforts we should see the finished product in about 10 days time. The fabricated weatherproof walkway panels will drop into the frame once it is on site. The first 5m section will run from the shore to a steel frame on the concrete plinth to keep it above the high water levels – and the hinged second section will run from that out to the Jetty which will also be built shortly. Figs also organised the grading of our access walkway and that already looks good. We may need a donation of some temporary carpet to cover the ground in the walkway area.

High Water Erosion Damage This Morning

High Water Erosion Damage This Morning

This is a bigger than expected project. It will however ensure that our 2012 season will get off to a good start as we finalise the details on how to return to our Clubhouse area once again. Discussions with the ESB, Banks and Committee will continue and we will keep you posted. Thanks to all for your help and we look forward to seeing you down at the Lake as soon as we post the OPEN sign here shortly. WATCH THIS SPACE.

Bank erosion continues as the ESB have not dropped the water levels back to those which we normal for the past 50 years. As you can see, the new fencing installed just a year ago at the request of the ESB during our new Lease discussions, continues to be undermined by the high water and already the concrete footings can now be seen above ground.

SAD FAREWELLS TO RAY IN AUSTRALIA AND IRELAND

HEALESVILLE AND GOLDEN FALLS CELEBRATE A VERY SPECIAL LIFE

Healesville on Thursday bids farewell

Healesville on Thursday bids farewell

Following the Celebration of Ray Stokes life in Healesville, Victoria, in Australia on Thursday, Golden Falls Members met today in Dublin to also share some memories on Ray’s visits to the Club in Ballymore Eustace over the past 20 years or more. Some tears and lots of smiles !

Australia’s Ray Stokes made an enormous contribution to the sport of Waterskiing in his short 51 year life. He revolutionised Jump Ski design, converted almost all to a much safer way to score big Jump distances, coached almost every major international Jumper and five National Teams, brought Emma Sheers and June Fladborg all the way to setting World Jump Records, and most of all made global friendships on a scale never seen before in our sport. With over 30,000 individual messages on his CaringBridge pages, his impact was exceptional. Irish Federation President Des Burke-Kennedy was invited to organise his Memorial Ceremony with the Stokes family in Healesville, Australia on Thursday.

Golden Falls remembers Ray today

Golden Falls remembers Ray today

Today, our Golden Falls Members got together at Chris Terry’s Cafe Du Journal in Monkstown, County Dublin for breakfast and to also celebrate the life of somebody who made so many great friendships over these past 20 years at our Lake. We then moved to DunLaoghaire’s West Pier to share some final thoughts beside the water.

Our condolences go to Ray’s family and June and Mark and Neil and all his closest friends. Our Club was one of the first to invite Ray to provide coaching courses and we will never forget his friendship over the past 20+ years. May he rest in peace.
