CONGRATULATIONS TO JAKE BRIDGES

When Jake Bridges (Golden Falls WSC) had a nasty Jump accident in the UK almost two years ago, it could well have put him off the event forever.
That is not the way real athletes think and so this new National Open Men Jump Record is a great credit to him. His previous National Record was set at 56.0m – and now he has pushed it all the way up to 59.2m / 195ft.
We doubt if this will be Jake’s last National Jump Record and as that 60.0m level gets closer and closer, all eyes will be on Jake in the season ahead.
Right now, Jake is back at his studies at University in Louisiana.
We all congratulate him on both a great recovery and a great new National Open Men Jump Record.

HEALESVILLE AND GOLDEN FALLS CELEBRATE A VERY SPECIAL LIFE

Healesville on Thursday bids farewell
Following the Celebration of Ray Stokes life in Healesville, Victoria, in Australia on Thursday, Golden Falls Members met today in Dublin to also share some memories on Ray’s visits to the Club in Ballymore Eustace over the past 20 years or more. Some tears and lots of smiles !
Australia’s Ray Stokes made an enormous contribution to the sport of Waterskiing in his short 51 year life. He revolutionised Jump Ski design, converted almost all to a much safer way to score big Jump distances, coached almost every major international Jumper and five National Teams, brought Emma Sheers and June Fladborg all the way to setting World Jump Records, and most of all made global friendships on a scale never seen before in our sport. With over 30,000 individual messages on his CaringBridge pages, his impact was exceptional. Irish Federation President Des Burke-Kennedy was invited to organise his Memorial Ceremony with the Stokes family in Healesville, Australia on Thursday.

Golden Falls remembers Ray today
Today, our Golden Falls Members got together at Chris Terry’s Cafe Du Journal in Monkstown, County Dublin for breakfast and to also celebrate the life of somebody who made so many great friendships over these past 20 years at our Lake. We then moved to DunLaoghaire’s West Pier to share some final thoughts beside the water.
Our condolences go to Ray’s family and June and Mark and Neil and all his closest friends. Our Club was one of the first to invite Ray to provide coaching courses and we will never forget his friendship over the past 20+ years. May he rest in peace.

WINDY WEATHER BUT WE WILL NOT LET THAT STOP THE GRAND PRIX FUN

THANKS TO BILLABONG FOR THEIR GREAT SUPPORT
We put the finishing touches to the Club site this evening and all looks really good right now. A big thanks to Daryl, Donal, Carl and all the team for getting the place shipshape for our very special RAY STOKES GRAND PRIX.
It has been a very tough week for Ray. Brain surgery, general anaesthetics, blood transfusions, all take their toll but hopefully Ray will now feel better having got over this stage successfully. He hates cold weather and would really prefer to be up on the Gold Coast rather than in Melbourne. I don’t think he would fancy doing Rescue Boat duty when we kick off here at 09.30hrs here tomorrow !
We also launched a RAY RAFFLE just 48 hours ago and have been overwhelmed by the response from our Waterski friends. Just amazing ! The list of donated prizes is extraordinary – see below. Billabong have also donated Winners Prizes as we will give the standard Cash Prize to Ray also to help with his medical costs. As of tonight, we have sold exactly 40 RAY RAFFLE tickets at Euro 20.00 each and all this will also go to Ray.
So, our SLALOM and JUMP athletes will be ready on the dock tomorrow at 09.30hrs sharp – and we hope that the tail end of the USA Hurricanes don’t spoil our party !
Thank you all for your fantastic support. It is really appreciated by our Golden Falls Team.
HERE ARE THE PRIZES DONATED TO OUR RAY RAFFLE TOMORROW :

OUR MEMBERS USING EVERY MOMENT AVAILABLE ON THE WATER

KEELA AND MUM MIRIAM MAKE GREAT PROGRESS
‘Great to see that our Members continue to enjoy their time on the water with us and today was as busy as ever. On the Dock were Geoff, Miriam, Greg, Keela, Richie, Des, Dave – and Susi and her group of friends watched the sun set over another BBQ at the Clubhouse after their time on the water.
Daryl continues to do a great job and keeps everything shipshape – and don’t forget to call him if you want to confirm your times – 087 668 6225
Our Swans have returned again – two pairs – back to their usual spot over on the Quinlan’s side of the Lake. They seem to always know the boat path. Our Crested Cranes seem to have moved on but they usually come back at the end of the Summer to their place at the stone bridge. Thankfully, the Mink seem to have found a home somewhere else and that means that the Malibu does not smell like a Fish Market in the morning !

Daryl brews a proper cup of coffee !

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES BY OUR CLUB SKIERS
IN THE 2010 NATIONAL WATERSKI CHAMPIONSHIPS

OUR 2010 GOLDEN FALLS NATIONALS CHALLENGERS
Congratulations to our talented Skiers Carl Cautley, Geoff Clarke, Dom Jameson, and Daryl Higgins. All won Gold Medals at the 2010 National Waterski Championships at Lough Aghery WSC over the weekend. THIS WAS JUST PART OF A SEVEN MEDAL COLLECTION !
Congratulations also to Simon Durham and Daniel Hearne for challenging the winners and making sure that Golden Falls was very well represented in all events. Lets go for an even bigger Club Team next year !
Here is a summary of all the outstanding Golden Falls Member’s achievements in what were challenging conditions. Although it was warm, grey skies, a little drizzle and a gusty tail breeze forced the Jumpers and Slalom Skiers to make some serious tactical decisions in each Round. As usual, the best made the smartest decisions.

Geoff BACK IN GREAT OUTSTANDING FORM
55+ GEOFF CLARKE : Jump Gold

Carl OUTSTANDING IN +45
45+ CARL CAUTLEY : Slalom Gold, Tricks Gold, Jump Silver, Overall Gold

Dom CONTINUES WINNING STREAK
45+ Dom Jameson : Slalom Silver, Jump Gold

Daryl OVERCOMES INJURY IN STYLE

GOLDEN FALLS TEAM – SIMON DURHAM – DOMINIC JAMESON – CARL CAUTLEY – DARYL HIGGINS – DANIEL HEARNE
Here is a brief general report of today, Saturday, at the 2010 National Waterski Championships at Lough Aghery WSC in County Down. Well done to all our Golden Falls Skiers – and good luck in the Sunday Finals.

What are they doing in the long grass - checking the competition !
BIG CONGRATULATIONS to all 30 Skiers, Officials and Organisers who were ready and waiting on the Dock at precisely 8.30am today for Round 1 of our National Waterski Championships. The new pre-entry system really paid off. No last minute additions or deletions – just a totally enjoyable start to a great event. This has now set the standard for all our other IWWF calendar competitions in the future.

Our Driver Geoff Clarke kicks off the Slalom event
With a total of SEVEN judging cameras mounted on site, the Judges Room looked like a trading desk on the New York Stock Exchange – very impressive. The new Slalom Course, SplashEye and refurbished Jump Ramp also looked perfect. Well done Lough Aghery WSC.

Our Daryl Higgins and Simon Durham warm up for action
Chief Judge Stuart England and Driver Geoff Clarke kicked off with Slalom – and began with the U12 Boys. Young Daniel Galvin (Cork PB&WSC) set a cracking pace with a score of 0.5 Buoys at 55kph on the short 16m line. Yes, that was the U12 Category ! In fact this equaled the best score of his brother Barry T in the older U14 category.

Daryl gets back from his injury
Moving quickly through U17 and 55+, we then had some excellent performances in Mens 45+. Dominic Jameson (Golden Falls WSC) was first off the dock and led all the way with a score of 4 Buoys on the 13m line. Watch out for Dominic in the Finals tomorrow. It was also good to see Cormac Fitzpatric (Meteor WSC) back in form again in 2nd place with 3 Buoys on the 14.25m line. Mens 35+ also produced excellent performances with Chris McDowell (Meteor WSC) taking top place with a score of 1 Buoy on the 12m line. Daryl Higgins (Golden Falls WSC) came in second with 2 Buoys on the 13m line.

Daniel Hearne builds up his competition experience
Now it was time for the Open Battles. Diane Kirby (Meteor WSC) showed her consistency once again and came out on top with 3.25 Buoys on the 16m line. With our top seven Slalom Skiers lined up in Open Men, all eyes were on all seven as a mistake could pass the leaders baton to any in the line-up. Barry Galvin (Cork PB&WSC) was first off. As our unbeaten National Overall Champion, his weekend began with 2.5 Buoys on the 13m line – a very solid performance. Next came our National Record Holder, Rodney Watson (Meteor WSC). He ran the 12m line – and settled for 1.0 Buoys on the 11.25m line – to guarantee a great Final tomorrow. Jody Waterworth ((Meteor WSC), then set the cat amongst the pigeons !His score of 0.5 Buoys on the 12m line put him ahead of Barry Galvin and in 2nd place. Watch out for these three tomorrow !Youngsters Mark Scott, Daniel Hearne and Liam Fitzpatrick showed great promise and look very much the future champions in waiting.

Another Overall challenge for Barry
It was just after the BBQ lunch when we moved on to Tricks. This time is was the U14 Boys Champion, Barry T Galvin (Cork PB&WSC) who actually set the highest score of all categories today ! Yes, nobody could catch him. His training in France last week really made a difference. His 4280 points score and spectacular Flips run left all in his wake. Barry, his father, clocked up the next best – in Open Men – with a score of 1530 points proving that apart from young Barry T, we are not really a Tricking Nation !

Rodney unbeatable again today
The day finished on the very impressive Lough Aghery Jump Ramp. With the ParaMedic crew on site, 16 Jumpers set their sights on their titles and in good water conditions, it was a thrilling afternoon. Robin Skelton (Stillwaters WSC), Geoff Clarke and Carl Cautley and Dominic Jameson and Daryl Higgins (Golden Falls WSC), all attended the Stephen Critchley Training Course this week at Golden Falls in County Kildare and performed well. (Daryl 25.8m, Robin 29.3m, Geoff 35.5m, Carl 36.2m and Dominic 37.0m) In the Open category, there was pride at stake. Our National Overall Champion Barry Galvin already had solid scores in Slalom and Tricks today and needed to impress in Open Men Jump. He left no doubts with the top score of 43.6m. With a slight tail wind, it was a bit testing but only Jody Waterworth could get close with 41.3m. Again, this should be a cracking Final tomorrow – and GOOD LUCK to our Golden Falls Skiers..

STEVE’S COACHING COURSE BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN SUNSHINE
It was another 10 hour day at the Lake today – and it was our youngest Skiers who really excelled on Steve Critchley’s Coaching Course. These are the stars of the future and this year we have one of the largest groups of younger Skiers for some time. Well done to all – and especially the Parents who make it all possible.

Abby is ready for the Magic Ramp today
While all did very well on the water, here are just a few of the highlights. Ora landed her first Jumps – and that is a day every Skier remembers forever. Congratulations Ora and who knows, we may see you next year in the National Waterski Championships.

Waiting for your turn !
Keela ran the Slalom Course today at 46kph – an outstanding achievement considering how little time she has actually had on the water. Great progress Keela – well done.
Abby also had an amazing day. Firstly, she got very close to running the Slalom Course before she decided to try the Magic Ramp. So, all kitted out with her helmet, Jump Skis and Jump suit, she showed no signs of fear and her time on the horses over the years must have helped. She actually got over the Ramp a total of four times and survived ! Well done Abby.
Toby and Pippa must have been inspired by Abby ! Toby got up on one ski today and Pippa actually conquered the mono start. Two more great performances.
At this rate of progress, thanks to the patience of Steve and Daryl, we will have a bunch of really great Skiers at Golden Falls in the very near future.

A Week To Remember at the Lake
