IRISH TIMES PHOTOGRAPHER TOM LAWLOR BRINGS BACK 1985 MICHELE MEMORIES TODAY

Michele

Arminta Wallace wrote a lovely piece today for the Irish Times Magazine section. It brings back so many great memories. Back in 1985, THIRTY years ago, we invited all the leading journalists down to our Lake to help promote what became the World’s biggest Cash Prize Jump Classic. There were so many journalists, we had to hire a bus ! The lovely Michele Cautley (now Mrs Jameson) was the star of the show and was also Irish National Overall Waterski Champion and Golden Falls member at that time. Photographer Tom Lawlor was also one of the best of his generation and here he has captured a beautiful shot of Michele dressed in a Ball Gown making it all look easy. The following day, a photo of Michele and Des Burke-Kennedy appeared on the front page of the Irish Times – both looking like they were on their way to meet Patrick Hillery, the then President of Ireland !

Many thanks to the Irish Times – and make sure you buy your copy today ! Also, if you have some old photos of fun times at Golden Falls, do send them to : des@burke-kennedy.com

THE ORIGINAL 200ft CLUB MAKES GOLDEN FALLS HISTORY

SPOT THE ONLY STAR WHO DID NOT COMPETE AT GOLDEN FALLS !

This shot is a piece of real Waterski history – and our Club can share this history in a way you might not be aware of.

THE TEN 200 Ft Club MEMBERS

THE TEN 200 Ft Club MEMBERS

For over a  a decade, our Club hosted the biggest Waterski Jump Classic in the world. We also offered the largest Cash Prize purse in the world and hosted a World Cup Final. By coincidence, that was at the time when jumping 200ft was almost impossible. Ski technology was less advanced. Boats were not as well designed. Technical measurement systems were less sophisticated and coaching standards were lower. In spite of all that, TEN Jumpers who succeeded in breaking the “impossible” 200ft barrier  formed a group at the time known as the 200 FOOT CLUB – and here is a shot of those very special stars.

Now, here is the question …….

Only ONE of the 200 FOOT CLUB members did NOT compete at Golden Falls. Here is the list – and we will highlight the name of the odd man out on Monday !  Come back here and take a look and see if you guessed correctly.

By the way, Sammy Duvall, regarded by many as one of the greatest World Champions of all time, competed in his very last overseas event here at Golden Falls at our PADDY CLASSIC. It feels like yesterday !
