GEOFF HELPS IRISH WATERSKI TEAM TO TAKE HOME EIGHT MEDALS

FROM 35+ CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ITALY

Our Irish Waterski Team at the 35+ World Championships and Europe/Africa Championships in Segrate Milan Italy have returned home today with some outstanding results and a bunch of Personal Best scores. GOLDEN FALLS SKIER GEOFF CLARKE WAS ONE OF THE MEDAL WINNERS.

Ireland’s total Medals haul was EIGHT – quite an achievement !

This major international event includes two quite separate competitions – the World Championships and the Europe/Africa Championships – with Finals run also on separate days. It is a six day marathon test and exhaustion point is often reached just before the closing ceremonies ! The organization by the Italian Waterski Federation was outstanding on all fronts. After two days of cool damp weather, Summer returned for the last four days. As far as our Irish Team is concerned, it was one of the most rewarding to date. This shows clearly in the eventual TEAM positions in both events.

With 33 Countries in the World Championships and many fielding very large teams, our Irish Team beat 26 Countries and captured 7th place – ahead of such significant players as Sweden, Denmark, Italy , Russia, Spain, Australia, etc.

With 22 Countries competing in the Europe/Africa Championships and many also fielding very large teams, our Irish Team beat 15 Countries and captured 5th place – ahead of such significant players as Italy, Denmark, Russia, Spain, South Africa, Belgium, Greece, etc.

Congratulations to Dianne Kirby, Geoff Clarke, Barry Galvin and Rodney Watson. Competing against such major international stars as Drew Ross CAN, Steve Cockeram NZL and Olga Gubarenko RUS and achieving such high placings in the Team scores was an outstanding achievement. Already there is talk of planning for the next World Championships – likely to be in California !

Here are the individual scores – and many are outstanding Personal Best performances. If we could find a way to increase our Trick performances, few Countries could beat the Irish Team next time around.
