WELCOME HOME TO JAKE – AND ALSO TO STEVE AND DANYELLE

Jake welcomed home by Daryl

Jake welcomed home by Daryl

This was a happy week at Golden Falls. ‘Great to have Jake Bridges back with us once again and to see him fully recovered from his heel injury which knocked him out of competition for about a year. Jake got back to fitness for the Europe Africa U21 Championships and is now looking forward to getting back to jumping over 60m once again. Recovery takes time and he is making great progress. That Irish Jump Record will fall again soon – only a matter of time and the name will be JAKE BRIDGES.

It was also great to have Steve Critchley back with us once again. This time he brought Danyelle Bennett with him – straight from the World Championships in Dubna Russia – and both ran a very successful Coaching Course at Golden Falls over this past week.  It is always a pleasure to have some of the World’s top Skiers with us and you can be quite sure that our younger Golden Falls Skiers will remember this experience for years to come.

We still have this ongoing problem with very high water levels. It is causing dreadful damage to our Lake banks and also undermining the new foundations of our Stone Bridge fencing. We are in contact with the ESB and are still totally puzzled as to why they need such enormous volumes of water which is eroding the banks day by day. Lets hope we can get this resolved quickly.

BUMPER MONTH FOR THE CLUB

AND ALSO FOR OUR OWN ALAN DAGG

We have just closed off our own Club Waterski statistics for the month of June – and they really do look good. Even though the first weeks were windy, the 20C water and good second half saw 121 day Visitor skis plus all our full member skis – and that makes it a very special month. Added to that the success of our National Children’s Day where we had 74 visitors on that day alone and got 40 children out on the water, and we can be proud of our efforts

Well done to all our Members who worked hard to bring this fun to our Club – and July already looks like another very busy one !

Broadcasting "Live" from Golden Falls to Perth

Broadcasting "Live" from Golden Falls to Perth

Meanwhile, we received a very special request from Perth in Western Australia. The great news was that Golden Falls own Alan Dagg, now living in that beautiful City, also a past Irish Federation President and a totally dominant Jumper and Slalom Skier here at home, was about to be inducted into the Western Australia Waterski Hall of Fame. The request was for a surprise video clip from our Lake to put on the big screen in Perth during the Ceremony. It was also needed in about 48 hours !

Its on that screen over there in Perth !

So, if you saw a mini Studio erected at our Boardwalk recently in glorious sunshine and a mad character talking to a tiny video camera on a tripod, he had not completely lost his marbles. That recording was on the big screen in Perth within a few hours – and Alan got the big surprise and Award which he justly deserved. We had a nice note from him shortly afterwards to say thank you for the Golden Falls effort.

CLUB HOSTS TWO KIDZ CAMPS PLUS STEVE CRITCHLEY COURSE IN JULY & AUGUST

Steve Critchley returns to Golden Falls

Steve Critchley returns to Golden Falls

We all know that our Summers are just far too short. This means we have to make the most of every day on the water. The folks at Golden Falls in County Kildare are certainly not wasting any time on their 20C water right now ! With one Kidz Camp already completed plus the highly successful National Children’s Day last Sunday, three more special Courses have been organised for the coming weeks. That lake at Golden Falls will be a busy place !

For the week of August 8th, ranked in the top 20 in the World, Jumper Steve Critchley will return once again for some high level coaching. Ten more advanced lucky souls will spend each day on the water with Steve and all will be guaranteed a special learning experience. At this early stage, we hear that the Course is almost booked out already as Steve’s reputation is a major attraction. His 2010 Course at the Club was one of the best for some time and all are really looking forward to his return.

Top 20 in the World Rankings

Top 20 in the World Rankings

The Club also has TWO more Kidz Camps marked in for the weeks of July 25th and August 2nd. The first is a five day Course and the second a four day Course. Again, we hear that these are also almost booked out. The Club’s Coach Daryl Higgins, has had great success this Summer with the young stars in the making and we all hope that this will deliver some serious competitors a little down the road. However, having fun on the water is the real aim in the coming weeks and judging by the popularity of the June Kidz Camp, this looks like a certainty.

Well done to all the team at Golden Falls – photos and reports to follow soon.

If your Club has special activities planned for the coming weeks,  just send us the details and photos, and we will help to spread the good word !

BRIDGE PROJECT MAKES GREAT PROGRESS

SAND AND CEMENT AND STEEL AND A SHOVEL ARE ALL IT TAKES

Filling the steel fixings with cement

Filling the steel fixings with cement

Wind, rain, hailstones and cold northerlies did not stop play down at the bridge today !

So far, we have used 30 galvanised steel anchors, 22 bags of cement, four tons of sand and a spirit level to be sure to be sure. We have also moved the two gates and will put them on the new posts at the bridge entry point. The preserved Stud Railing and Posts will not arrive till next week and the last stage will be the green wire phase !

When its all done, we should organise a bridge party when its time to cut the tape. It will certainly be the safest bridge this side of San Francisco – even if it did cost well over €2,000.  Actually, it will look great and add a lot to our entry point. There will even be a pedestrian gate beside the large gate to help keep vehicles out and skiers in !

CARL SETS STANDARD FOR THE JumpAthon WORLD TO BEAT

Carl celebrates in style with Figs and Geoff

What a great June Holiday Weekend at our Club. With many Members away we did not expect all the surprises both on and off the water. Well done to all for making it a lot of fun.

Carl warms up for the Jump challenge

Carl warms up for the Jump challenge

Before we get to the big stuff, we finished with cool air but perfect skiing conditions. With Groups on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Members skiing, work on our Stone Bridge project, new marker buoys in the Lake and some minor repairs to the Cowcatcher, it was all action. As it is still just the first week of June, we are very well set up for the Summer season.

‘And now for the big news !

Carl decided that today was the day to take on the JumpAthon for Ray challenge. In other words, how many non-stop Jumps could he take without throwing the handle. His target was to line up TWENTY sponsors at the standard rate of €1.00 per Jump. With Geoff driving and Figs as observer, Des captured all the camera action for posterity and YouTube. We guessed he would probably make SEVEN non-stop landings – but we were wrong ! At TEN, the fans were cheering. At FIFTEEN, the fans were jumping up and down. When he threw the handle on landing Jump number TWENTY, this set the WORLD RECORD for non-stop jumps. Now it is up to all Ray’s Jump friends around the world to try to break the 20 mark and raise some funds for Ray in his time of need. Carl now has €400 in the bag !

Congratulations Carl.

GOLDEN FALLS SHARES WATERSKI EXPERIENCE WITH IRISH SPORTS COUNCIL

TROY’S MARTIAL ARTS BACKGROUND MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE

TROY MAKES QUICK PROGRESS

The Irish Sports Council (ISC) have worked closely with our Federation for years on a wide range of projects and their support has been greatly appreciated.  Strategic Plan, Anti-Doping, Child Welfare, Inclusion, Governance, Coaching, etc., are all part of the programme. With so many other sports involved, the challenge of fully understanding each is a major one. Troy Reneker of the ISC, a successful Marshal Arts athlete by background, set about resolving this over the weekend with a visit to Golden Falls WSC.

Troy decided that the best way to learn about Waterskiing was to put on a wet suit and take a lesson with our own Daryl Higgins who has recently completed his Coaching Ireland Course at the University of Limerick. Troy’s Martial Arts background made quite a difference. Starting on the Teaching Boom, he quickly progressed to the short line and then on to the long line – all in just one lesson ! Hopefully this will not be his last Waterski experience and we hope that it also gave him a wider insight to the skills and technology involved. Well done Troy and we look forward to seeing you and your colleagues at the ISC back on the water again soon.

WILL GOLDEN FALLS SET A UNIQUE WORLD RECORD IN JUNE FOR RAY ?

JumpAthon for Ray goes global today !

JumpAthon for Ray goes global today !

This is a great story ! Just a few weeks ago, Carl called me with this concept – How about setting up a unique Fund Raiser for Ray based on the Jump Ramp ? We tossed around some ideas and just minutes ago went global with the plan !  Here is how it will work, not just here at Golden Falls, but at EVERY Club with a Jump Ramp in the World today. Well that is what we really hope will happen.

We set up a special Facebook page and uploaded a bunch of Ray photos. Just type in these words  – JumpAthon for Ray

Imagine this. If you were to try Jumping on our Magic Ramp, non-stop without a break, how many could you land ! 5 / 10/ 15 / 20 ?

Well, if you also rounded up your friends and asked each to contribute just ONE EURO for every Jump you landed, this could make it very interesting. Carl has already got sponsorship and I’m sure he and all our other jumpers will be delighted to get more backers. There is no limit to how many each Jumper can secure. ‘And its only ONE EURO per Jump landed.

Finally, if you then collected the contributions based on the number you landed – on any Ramp height at any speed, and then transferred those funds to the Ray Stokes fund for his boys, this would make it both great fun and a great cause. The direct link  for the month of June for contributions to support Ray’s boys is :

www.stokesskis.com

Today I spoke to Ray and he sounded stronger than he has been for ages. Now that the six tumors have been removed, he can take food again and is regaining strength every day. New medication is the next step. We hope that the success of the “JumpAthon for Ray” may help to remove some of the worries ahead of our good friend.  So, if you see a Jumper, please don’t wait for him/her to ask, just say “I’m in for ONE EURO per jump”  Watch this space for the photos – and who knows, perhaps a World Non-Stop Record.

If you need a bit more information on how to set this up, check out this Link :

‘Great concept Carl – and maybe this weekend we will be the first Club to report some results. The weather forecast is perfect for Golden Falls ! Get those cameras ready……..

WE WANT TO SEE ALL OUR SKIERS ON THE LAKE THIS WEEK !

Daryl enjoying his Slalom set today

‘April was perfection – May was a bit on the windy side but Summer is definitely here. If you have not been down at Golden Falls recently, the weather forecast for the coming weeks sounds perfect for some great skiing.

Today, Daryl and Geoff did some serous work on the water. Both gladiators had some great Jump sets – and Daryl was straight back out with a Slalom and Trick run. As two of our most talented skiers, our photos caught some of the action this afternoon. The O’Malley family are also making serious progress this year and it is great to see all our younger skiers enjoying the warm water.

So, please don’t wait for October – now is the time to head for Golden Falls – and why not bring your friends and introduce them to the fun of Waterskiing. Beginners of all ages and skill levels are welcome. Just call Daryl at any time on 087 668 6225

OFFICIAL CLUB DRIVERS LIST UPDATED BY GFWSC COMMITTEE

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

DRIVERS LIST 2011 POSTED ON OUR CLUB NOTICE BOARD

We all know how important safety is in our sport. It is also vital to be aware of the risks and especially when it comes to the Insurance coverage and competent Boat Driving.

Our Committee reviews our CLUB DRIVERS list from time to time to ensure that all have the skills and experience required. It is not as easy as it sometimes looks – holding a straight line in the Slalom Course at 58kph with a determined strong Skier out the back, rope lengths and shortening routines, speed settings, knowing how to drive a precise Jump Course, being aware of where the hidden rocks and obstacles are beneath the surface, knowing where to turn at both ends of the Lake, controlling the boat speed at the turns, safe docking, refueling routines, correct engine noises and smells, etc.etc. As we are also keen to have new qualified Drivers, our Assisted Drivers List is designed to help those who have some basic skills to move towards Club Driver status. This all dovetails into the Federation Drivers Courses and we hope to have news on these in the near future. First Aid Courses will also be organised at the Club this Summer.

Here are our latest DRIVERS lists :

CLUB DRIVERS

  • Daryl Higgins (Chief Driver)

  • Carl Cautley

  • Geoff Clarke

  • Simon Durham

  • Des Burke-Kennedy

  • Sam Burke-Kennedy

  • Fiachra O’Riordan

  • Donal Connolly

  • Harry Bridges

ASSISTED DRIVERS

  • Mark Cassin

  • Richard O’Callaghan

  • Rick Deegan

  • Brid Deegan

  • Greg O’Malley

  • Dermot Fenton

  • Daniel Hearne

Daryl Higgins, as Chief Driver, will monitor progress and let the Committee know when our Assisted Drivers are ready for Club Driver status. Watch out also for the letters S,T,J,W, after the names on the Notice Board as they signify which disciplines Drivers are qualified to pull. At the end of the day, its really all about experience PLUS TIME ON THE WATER.

GREAT LOGO !

GREAT LOGO !

The good news is that April has broken all records at our Club for the month. Our own Members clocked up 110 ski sessions on the water. Visitors added 94 sessions. This total of 204 ski sessions is unheard of for April which is often a cold and windy month of the year. If you have not yet had a chance to get out on the water, call Daryl today and he will be delighted to help. His number – as you can see on the “Golden Falls” car is : 087 668 6225
