CONCRETE SET, WELDING CONTINUES, WOODWORK AND ASSEMBLY SOON

Concrete in place

Concrete in place

It may look a bit on the quiet side down at the Golden Falls Lake at the moment

but don’t be fooled by that !

Right now, the new concrete plinth for receiving the new STAINLESS STEEL walkway from the Car Park Jetty has firmly set. As you can see from the photo, all looks ready for the structural engineering delivery !

Back at Watermark Engineering, Joe Hearne is welding away and the two walkway sections and support unit will be on site shortly. We will let all Members know when we will need a hand but in the meantime, feel free to help clean up the Car Park area and remove the Trailer which is ready for a visit to the Dump.

Old Jetty ready for expansion

Old Jetty ready for expansion

We are also just about to start the carpentry work on the expanded old wooden Jetty which will also house the LPG equipment as before. Des is rounding up his saws and drills and is ready for action. Once this is ready, then we can assemble the lot and put that Malibu in the water where is deserves to be !

Get ready – we are almost there and Daryl is waiting for you to bring all your friends down to the Lake to enjoy every moment of this Summer ahead. GROUPS will be especially welcome. We also have some very special Ski Packages to announce shortly – a first in Ireland with a novel twist ! Working from the Car Park in the early stages will be a bit challenging but that will not be for long as development plans will be released for all to see very soon.

WOMEN’S FUN DAY TOMORROW SUNDAY AT GOLDEN FALLS

ANNUAL WOMEN’S FUN DAY ON THE WATER FROM 09.30 TOMORROW SUNDAY

FUN ALL DAY ON SUNDAY

FUN ALL DAY ON SUNDAY

This event was created last year by Golden Falls. This year, SIX Clubs are now involved and so it is really becoming a NATIONAL fun day for women on the water.

The whole idea is to increase the number of women involved in our sport. Fully supported by the Irish Sports Council, this project is really working. While female participation was at about 30% in the past years, last month our research showed it at 51% for July – and all time record. Well done to all for making this welcome trend happen.

Tomorrow we kick off at 09.30hrs and will keep going till the last one hangs on !  It should be great fun. Do come and join us and bring those cameras so that we can upload some great photos here on Monday morning.  All you need is your swim gear and a towel – we will supply all the other equipment needed. At a special price of just Euro 15, we hope to be inundated all day long !!!

JAKE STEVE AND DANYELLE HAVE GREAT WEEK AT GOLDEN FALLS

WELCOME HOME TO JAKE – AND ALSO TO STEVE AND DANYELLE

Jake welcomed home by Daryl

Jake welcomed home by Daryl

This was a happy week at Golden Falls. ‘Great to have Jake Bridges back with us once again and to see him fully recovered from his heel injury which knocked him out of competition for about a year. Jake got back to fitness for the Europe Africa U21 Championships and is now looking forward to getting back to jumping over 60m once again. Recovery takes time and he is making great progress. That Irish Jump Record will fall again soon – only a matter of time and the name will be JAKE BRIDGES.

Steve Critchley and Danyelle Bennett at the Club

Steve Critchley and Danyelle Bennett at the Club

It was also great to have Steve Critchley back with us once again. This time he brought Danyelle Bennett with him – straight from the World Championships in Dubna Russia – and both ran a very successful Coaching Course at Golden Falls over this past week.  It is always a pleasure to have some of the World’s top Skiers with us and you can be quite sure that our younger Golden Falls Skiers will remember this experience for years to come.

We still have this ongoing problem with very high water levels. It is causing dreadful damage to our Lake banks and also undermining the new foundations of our Stone Bridge fencing. We are in contact with the ESB and are still totally puzzled as to why they need such enormous volumes of water which is eroding the banks day by day. Lets hope we can get this resolved quickly.

CLUB HOSTS TWO KIDZ CAMPS PLUS STEVE CRITCHLEY COURSE IN JULY & AUGUST

Steve Critchley returns to Golden Falls

Steve Critchley returns to Golden Falls

We all know that our Summers are just far too short. This means we have to make the most of every day on the water. The folks at Golden Falls in County Kildare are certainly not wasting any time on their 20C water right now ! With one Kidz Camp already completed plus the highly successful National Children’s Day last Sunday, three more special Courses have been organised for the coming weeks. That lake at Golden Falls will be a busy place !

For the week of August 8th, ranked in the top 20 in the World, Jumper Steve Critchley will return once again for some high level coaching. Ten more advanced lucky souls will spend each day on the water with Steve and all will be guaranteed a special learning experience. At this early stage, we hear that the Course is almost booked out already as Steve’s reputation is a major attraction. His 2010 Course at the Club was one of the best for some time and all are really looking forward to his return.

Top 20 in the World Rankings

Top 20 in the World Rankings

The Club also has TWO more Kidz Camps marked in for the weeks of July 25th and August 2nd. The first is a five day Course and the second a four day Course. Again, we hear that these are also almost booked out. The Club’s Coach Daryl Higgins, has had great success this Summer with the young stars in the making and we all hope that this will deliver some serious competitors a little down the road. However, having fun on the water is the real aim in the coming weeks and judging by the popularity of the June Kidz Camp, this looks like a certainty.

Well done to all the team at Golden Falls – photos and reports to follow soon.

If your Club has special activities planned for the coming weeks,  just send us the details and photos, and we will help to spread the good word !

OUR WORLD RECORD PLUS GREAT SKIING ON HOLIDAY WEEKEND

CARL SETS STANDARD FOR THE JumpAthon WORLD TO BEAT

Carl celebrates in style with Figs and Geoff

What a great June Holiday Weekend at our Club. With many Members away we did not expect all the surprises both on and off the water. Well done to all for making it a lot of fun.

Carl warms up for the Jump challenge

Carl warms up for the Jump challenge

Before we get to the big stuff, we finished with cool air but perfect skiing conditions. With Groups on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Members skiing, work on our Stone Bridge project, new marker buoys in the Lake and some minor repairs to the Cowcatcher, it was all action. As it is still just the first week of June, we are very well set up for the Summer season.

Daryl at full stretch

‘And now for the big news !

Carl decided that today was the day to take on the JumpAthon for Ray challenge. In other words, how many non-stop Jumps could he take without throwing the handle. His target was to line up TWENTY sponsors at the standard rate of €1.00 per Jump. With Geoff driving and Figs as observer, Des captured all the camera action for posterity and YouTube. We guessed he would probably make SEVEN non-stop landings – but we were wrong ! At TEN, the fans were cheering. At FIFTEEN, the fans were jumping up and down. When he threw the handle on landing Jump number TWENTY, this set the WORLD RECORD for non-stop jumps. Now it is up to all Ray’s Jump friends around the world to try to break the 20 mark and raise some funds for Ray in his time of need. Carl now has €400 in the bag !

Congratulations Carl.

GOLDEN FALLS SHARES WATERSKI EXPERIENCE WITH IRISH SPORTS COUNCIL

TROY’S MARTIAL ARTS BACKGROUND MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE

TROY MAKES QUICK PROGRESS

The Irish Sports Council (ISC) have worked closely with our Federation for years on a wide range of projects and their support has been greatly appreciated.  Strategic Plan, Anti-Doping, Child Welfare, Inclusion, Governance, Coaching, etc., are all part of the programme. With so many other sports involved, the challenge of fully understanding each is a major one. Troy Reneker of the ISC, a successful Marshal Arts athlete by background, set about resolving this over the weekend with a visit to Golden Falls WSC.

Troy decided that the best way to learn about Waterskiing was to put on a wet suit and take a lesson with our own Daryl Higgins who has recently completed his Coaching Ireland Course at the University of Limerick. Troy’s Martial Arts background made quite a difference. Starting on the Teaching Boom, he quickly progressed to the short line and then on to the long line – all in just one lesson ! Hopefully this will not be his last Waterski experience and we hope that it also gave him a wider insight to the skills and technology involved. Well done Troy and we look forward to seeing you and your colleagues at the ISC back on the water again soon.

OFFICIAL CLUB DRIVERS LIST UPDATED BY GFWSC COMMITTEE

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

DRIVERS LIST 2011 POSTED ON OUR CLUB NOTICE BOARD

We all know how important safety is in our sport. It is also vital to be aware of the risks and especially when it comes to the Insurance coverage and competent Boat Driving.

Our Committee reviews our CLUB DRIVERS list from time to time to ensure that all have the skills and experience required. It is not as easy as it sometimes looks – holding a straight line in the Slalom Course at 58kph with a determined strong Skier out the back, rope lengths and shortening routines, speed settings, knowing how to drive a precise Jump Course, being aware of where the hidden rocks and obstacles are beneath the surface, knowing where to turn at both ends of the Lake, controlling the boat speed at the turns, safe docking, refueling routines, correct engine noises and smells, etc.etc. As we are also keen to have new qualified Drivers, our Assisted Drivers List is designed to help those who have some basic skills to move towards Club Driver status. This all dovetails into the Federation Drivers Courses and we hope to have news on these in the near future. First Aid Courses will also be organised at the Club this Summer.

Here are our latest DRIVERS lists :

CLUB DRIVERS

  • Daryl Higgins (Chief Driver)

  • Carl Cautley

  • Geoff Clarke

  • Simon Durham

  • Des Burke-Kennedy

  • Sam Burke-Kennedy

  • Fiachra O’Riordan

  • Donal Connolly

  • Harry Bridges

ASSISTED DRIVERS

  • Mark Cassin

  • Richard O’Callaghan

  • Rick Deegan

  • Brid Deegan

  • Greg O’Malley

  • Dermot Fenton

  • Daniel Hearne

Daryl Higgins, as Chief Driver, will monitor progress and let the Committee know when our Assisted Drivers are ready for Club Driver status. Watch out also for the letters S,T,J,W, after the names on the Notice Board as they signify which disciplines Drivers are qualified to pull. At the end of the day, its really all about experience PLUS TIME ON THE WATER.

OUR PERFECT LAWN AS WORK PROJECTS CONTINUE

HEALTH & SAFETY FENCING PROJECTS NOT AS EASY AS EXPECTED !

PERFECT LAWN AT GOLDEN FALLS !

PERFECT LAWN AT GOLDEN FALLS !

Thanks to Daryl’s daily routines, the Club looks great right now. Just look at that lawn at the Boardwalk !  Weather-wise, May has been a bit chilly and windy so far and not as nice as April which is a bit unusual. However, warm weather is on its way back next week.

With the LPG Tank fencing completed by the ESB last week, we have two more safety topics to address – repairs to the Fuel Jetty and the erection of a fence on both sides of our Stone Bridge. This Stone Bridge project is looking a lot more complicated and costly than we anticipated. The challenge is to secure the uprights in a slanted loose stone base. This week, Des had a prototype L- shaped steel unit made up and he and Daryl buried it in stone and cement as a trial. It looks good. However, we need about 30 of these and that is very expensive. Our Committee will meet next Monday to discuss this and we hope to find a solution then.
